Manchester United forward JJ Gabriel has arrived in Barcelona as a group of European football's most powerful clubs intensify their pursuit of the 15-year-old prodigy.

Gabriel, who turned 15 earlier this year, has formally requested the cancellation of his registration at Manchester United with immediate effect. It is understood he departed the United Kingdom on Thursday, initially travelling to France before making his way to Barcelona.

Europe's biggest clubs circling

BBC Sport reported on Thursday that Real Madrid hold a firm interest in the youngster. Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Paris St-Germain are also known to be pursuing him, making this one of the most hotly contested teenage recruitment battles in recent memory.

Should Manchester United retain his registration, Gabriel would be prevented from joining any other English club before the end of the season. However, a potential route to an EU club exists — if Gabriel secures a European Union passport through his father, a former Republic of Ireland international, or his mother, who has Greek-Cypriot heritage, he could complete a move to a club within the EU when he turns 16 on 6 October.

A debut to remember — then silence

Gabriel has not featured in training at Manchester United since 10 September, the day he announced himself to a wider audience by scoring a hat-trick on his Uefa Youth League debut. Notably, UEFA competition rules bar him from representing any other club in this season's Uefa Youth League.

Sources close to Gabriel have expressed frustration that the club omitted him from their Champions League opening fixture against Sabah FK — a match Michael Carrick's side won 4-0. Gabriel had also found the net in each of his first two Premier League 2 appearances for the club this season.
