Julián Álvarez Confirms He Wants Out of Atletico Madrid

Julián Álvarez has made his intentions unmistakably clear: the Argentina forward wants to leave Atletico Madrid before the next season begins.
Speaking to ESPN after Argentina's 2-0 victory over Austria in a FIFA World Cup 2026 group fixture on Monday, Álvarez refused to dodge the question about his future. "This isn't the time to talk about this but I can't hide it," the 26-year-old said. "I try to be an honest person. I spoke with Atletico de Madrid, and I think a transfer is the best option. I want to fulfil my dream."
Barcelona lead the chase
Álvarez has been the subject of sustained transfer speculation throughout the summer window, with Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain all mentioned as potential destinations. Of those, Barcelona's interest is reported to carry the most substance — The Athletic describing Álvarez as the Catalans' number one target and noting that a new offer is expected in the coming weeks.
Real Madrid's pursuit became entangled in the club's recent presidential election, with Los Blancos claiming to have submitted a significant bid while Atletico Madrid publicly dismissed any such approach. Atletico subsequently posted a statement on X issuing what they called "clarifications" — among them that no offer for Álvarez had been considered.
Premier League champions Arsenal were also believed to hold an interest in the Argentine. The connection carries an intriguing backstory: Andrea Berta, who played a central role in brokering Álvarez's move from Manchester City to Atletico two years ago, is now the Gunners' sporting director.
A record at Atletico that speaks for itself
Álvarez joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City following a stint in the Premier League that produced 20 goals in 67 appearances. At the Metropolitano, he has been equally prolific — scoring 49 goals in 106 appearances across all competitions for Los Rojiblancos.
A move to Barcelona would place Álvarez on course to win a league title in a third different country, having already claimed a La Liga medal with Atletico and a Premier League title under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. He also won the UEFA Champions League with City three years ago.
On the international stage, Álvarez was part of the Argentina squad that lifted the World Cup for a third time in Qatar in 2022, contributing four goals in that tournament. He will hope to add to his tally of 14 international goals as Argentina continue their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in North America — even if Lionel Messi, who extended his record as the World Cup's all-time top scorer against Austria, commands most of the headlines.
Atletico Madrid are yet to respond publicly to Álvarez's candid remarks.
