Harry Kane has described the pain of England's elimination from the FIFA World Cup 2026 as gut-wrenching, after Argentina overturned a 1-0 deficit to win the semi-final 2-1 in stoppage time.
England had appeared destined for their first men's World Cup final since 1966 when Anthony Gordon broke the deadlock in the 55th minute of a charged and combative encounter. Thomas Tuchel's side held that lead deep into the second half — yet it ultimately slipped away in the most agonising fashion.
Enzo Fernandez sparked Argentina's remarkable comeback with a brilliant equaliser five minutes from the end of normal time. Then, as the clock ticked into added time, Lautaro Martinez met Lionel Messi's cross with a precise header to send Argentina through and shatter England's dreams.
Kane, speaking to the BBC shortly after the final whistle, admitted that England lost discipline and fell into a defensive shell once they took the lead — a mistake he said proved fatal at this level of the competition.
