Kimmich Admits Germany Deserved World Cup Exit After Paraguay Shock

Germany captain Joshua Kimmich has conceded that his side had no grounds for complaint after Paraguay ended their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in the round of 32.
In one of the most stunning upsets in recent World Cup history, Paraguay — ranked 31 places below Germany in FIFA's world rankings — eliminated the four-time champions via a sudden-death penalty shootout, winning 4-3 after the match ended 1-1 following 90 minutes and extra time.
How the match unfolded
Paraguay struck first through Julio Enciso, who gave them a shock lead. Kai Havertz levelled with a header to make it 1-1, sending the tie to extra time. Jonathan Tah believed he had won it for Germany with a header, only for VAR to rule the effort out in controversial fashion.
The shootout that followed was a painful one for Germany, who had never previously lost a World Cup penalty shootout — until now.
Kimmich's damning verdict
Speaking in the mixed zone after the final whistle, as reported by Sky Germany, Kimmich did not spare his teammates or himself in his assessment of the tournament.
