Konate Set to Join Real Madrid on Four-Year Contract

2 hours ago·1 min

Ibrahima Konate is set to become a Real Madrid player after the Spanish giants confirmed they have reached an agreement with the France centre-back on a four-year contract running until 30 June 2030.

The 27-year-old departs Liverpool as a free agent at the end of June, with contract renewal talks breaking down over a disagreement on his valuation and wages. He joined the Reds in 2021 from RB Leipzig for £35 million on a five-year deal.

During his time at Anfield, Konate made 183 appearances across all competitions and collected an impressive trophy haul — the Premier League, the FA Cup, and two League Cups.

A bittersweet farewell

Konate is currently representing France at the 2026 World Cup, though his Liverpool exit was tinged with regret. He revealed he had been "deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye" to supporters when the Reds faced Brentford in their final Premier League fixture of the season on 24 May.

"At that moment, I didn't know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you," Konate added.

A summer of arrivals at the Bernabéu

Konate's move to Real Madrid comes as the club, now under manager Jose Mourinho in his second spell in charge, continues to reshape its squad. Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva, 31, has also arrived on a free transfer following his departure from Manchester City, while Spain defender Marc Cucurella has been signed from Chelsea in a deal worth £52 million. Real Madrid did not win a major trophy last season.
