Kun Khalifat FC Poised for Ownership Change as Shareholders Seek New Investor

1 hour ago·2 min

Owerri-based Nigeria Premier Football League club Kun Khalifat FC could be on the verge of a significant change in ownership, with the club's shareholders actively seeking a buyer for a majority stake in the club.

Club president Amaefula Michael confirmed the development in a formal letter addressed to the NPFL, revealing that talks with a prospective buyer are already underway.

"On behalf of the shareholders of Kun Khalifat of Owerri, I hereby confirm that we are in the process of handing over the majority shares of the company to a prospective buyer. You will be duly informed when the process is concluded. Meanwhile, we appeal to you to commence the process of transfer of ownership to the prospective buyer," Michael wrote.

What a takeover would mean

If the deal goes through, the incoming investor would acquire a controlling stake in the Imo State club, pending the completion of all required ownership transfer procedures.

One factor to watch is timing — should the takeover not be finalised before the new NPFL season kicks off, it could complicate any plans to rebrand or rename the club. Further details on the identity of the prospective buyer and the terms of the agreement are expected to emerge once the transaction reaches its conclusion.

A club that defied the odds

Kun Khalifat earned their place in the NPFL during the 2024/25 season, securing promotion to Nigerian top-flight football for the first time. Despite battling serious funding constraints throughout their debut campaign, the Pride of Imo managed to preserve their top-flight status — a remarkable achievement for a newly promoted side.

The potential ownership change now opens a new chapter for the club, with fresh investment offering the prospect of greater stability heading into the upcoming season.
