Larsson Backs Sweden to Pull Off Shock Against World Cup Favourites France

Sweden assistant coach Sebastian Larsson has declared that his side are fully capable of defeating France in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash, scheduled for Tuesday in New Jersey.
Entering the match as significant underdogs, the former midfielder expressed firm belief in manager Graham Potter's squad, insisting that Sweden have a history of toppling higher-ranked opponents on the biggest stages.
Confidence from past giant-killings
Larsson pointed to Sweden's track record against stronger nations as a source of genuine belief ahead of the knockout tie — even with a side as formidable as France standing in their way.
"I don't think I need to say much about France. They have a couple of guys who are quite skilled," Larsson said. "We will have our challenges, but we are looking forward to it in a fantastic way."
"If you look back, we've managed to knock out bigger teams before, even if it's France this time. It gives me a certain amount of belief in things, definitely in me and hopefully in the players too."
Larsson also noted that Sweden still possess players capable of producing decisive moments, and that getting every detail right will be essential against the tournament favourites.
"I hope they don't look forward to meeting us. But if they do, that's just how it is. I think there is a respect for us — we still have players who can deliver very good things. For us it's about getting everything right, because that will be required," he said.
"It'll be something to get our teeth into, but we're very much looking forward to the match," Larsson added.
A personal history with France
Larsson, who earned 133 caps for Sweden, has his own memorable moment against France — he scored the second goal in a 2-0 victory over Les Bleus at Euro 2012. He is among a handful of figures still involved with the national setup from the tenure of former head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson, who was dismissed last October after Sweden collected just one point from their opening four World Cup qualifying matches.
