Liverpool and Barcelona in Advanced Talks Over Ronald Araujo Permanent Deal

1 hour ago·2 min

Ronald Araujo's loan spell at Liverpool could be cut short — in the best possible way. According to TEAMtalk reporter Graeme Bailey, Barcelona have made initial contact with Liverpool over converting the Uruguayan's temporary stay into a permanent transfer as early as January.

The 27-year-old centre-back joined Liverpool from Barcelona in August on a loan deal that includes an option to buy, valued at €55 million (£47 million). Bailey reports that Barcelona are now pushing to activate that arrangement ahead of schedule, motivated by a desire to raise funds for their own defensive reinforcements.

A deal that suits all parties

Liverpool, for their part, appear more than willing. Sources cited by Bailey confirm that the club are open to making the move permanent, delighted by the impact Araujo has had since arriving at Anfield.

Araujo himself has reportedly signalled he is open to a permanent switch — a crucial development that makes an early agreement all the more plausible.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are believed to be targeting a left-sided central defender in the January window, and accelerating Araujo's departure would free up the budget to pursue that target.

Araujo's starring role at Anfield

The Uruguayan has been one of Liverpool's standout performers since the season began under new manager Andoni Iraola. He has started six Premier League fixtures and featured in every league and UEFA Champions League match so far.

Deployed primarily at right-back — a position forced upon Liverpool by injuries to Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley — Araujo has thrived with his characteristically aggressive, all-action style, quickly winning over the Anfield faithful.

Liverpool's recent form has been equally encouraging. Back-to-back Premier League wins against Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion, combined with UEFA Champions League victories over LASK and Villarreal, have lifted Iraola's side into the top four. A midweek penalty shootout victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup added further momentum.

Next up for Liverpool is a high-stakes home clash against second-placed Arsenal on Sunday — a match in which Araujo's defensive qualities could once again prove decisive.
