Alexis Mac Allister has ignited debate among Liverpool supporters after speaking publicly about his contract situation at the club — and opinion is firmly split on whether he was right to do so.

The Argentine midfielder, 27, is contracted to Liverpool until 2028. However, he revealed this week that he felt "very sad" not to have been offered a new deal over the summer, particularly after team-mates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch both signed extensions.

A familiar situation at Anfield

This is not the first time a Liverpool player has aired contract grievances in public. In November 2024, Mohamed Salah admitted he was "disappointed" by the absence of any offer from the club as he entered the final six months of his deal. Salah was ultimately handed an extension — and Mac Allister will be hoping history repeats itself.

As it was with Salah, however, supporters are divided on whether going public was the right move.

Praise from Pat Nevin

Former Everton and Chelsea winger Pat Nevin was among those who defended Mac Allister's approach, telling BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast that the midfielder said "exactly the right things."

"I thought he spoke brilliantly. He loves the club — any fan watching that is thinking he just wants to play for Liverpool Football Club. He's just shown us that is the case. If you are asked the question, you answer it honestly," Nevin said.

Nevin also raised the possibility of Mac Allister leaving, pointing to the recent departure of Cody Gakpo as evidence that situations can shift rapidly. He added that Mac Allister's tone did not suggest an unreasonable financial demand — rather, "somebody who just wanted a contract offered."

A 'clever tactic' or an overstep?

Liverpool fan Joel Richards, speaking on BBC Radio Merseyside, described the comments as a "clever tactic" from a player at a pivotal point in his career. "His next contract is going to be the biggest one of his career," Richards noted, adding that Mac Allister had "come very close to leaving in the summer."

Richards did, however, acknowledge the complication of last season's inconsistent form. "If you canvassed a decent size of Liverpool fans from last season and asked whether Mac Allister deserved a new deal, a large majority would say no — simply because of the performances he put in," he said. "But it's easy to focus on the negatives of last season. In his first two seasons at Liverpool, he was an important player."

Fans call it 'self-indulgent'

Not everyone was so understanding. Several supporters writing to BBC Sport were critical. Fan Rob felt Mac Allister "should do his talking on the pitch, not off it," while Patricio called the move "childish" and said the midfielder should "earn" an extension through performances.

Reader David pointed out that Mac Allister still has two years remaining on his current deal and that his form last season did not justify a renegotiation. Supporter Stuart went further, describing the public comments as "self-indulgent and not in any way helpful," arguing that Mac Allister — World Cup winner or not — is "not bigger than the club."

Liverpool's communications team have had to manage several player-driven controversies in recent times, including Salah's claim of being "thrown under the bus" by former head coach Arne Slot, and Szoboszlai's gesture towards supporters after a defeat at Manchester City. Mac Allister's latest remarks represent the newest addition to that list.
