Mamelodi Sundowns and USM Alger Face Off in TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup at Loftus Stadium

1 hour ago·2 min

Two of African club football's most decorated sides in recent memory will collide on Sunday, 8 November, when Mamelodi Sundowns host USM Alger at Loftus Stadium in Tshwane, Pretoria. Kick-off is set for 15h00 local time (13h00 GMT) in what promises to be an absorbing TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup 2026.

Champions of two competitions united on one stage

Sundowns earned their place in the fixture by winning the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League in the 2025/26 season, edging Morocco's AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate in the final. USM Alger arrive as TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup holders, having defeated Egypt's Zamalek 8-7 on penalties after the two-legged tie ended 1-1 on aggregate — a nervy climax to a dramatic final.

The winner will pocket USD 500,000, while the runner-up receives USD 250,000. The combined prize pool of USD 750,000 marks an increase of more than 130 percent compared to the prize money on offer in 2022, reflecting CAF's drive — under president Dr Patrice Motsepe — to grow the commercial and global stature of African football.

Super Cup pedigree on both sides

Neither club arrives without Super Cup history. Sundowns last lifted the trophy in 2017, defeating DR Congo's TP Mazembe 1-0, and will be looking to reclaim that continental silverware on home soil. USM Alger, meanwhile, are the reigning champions of this competition — they beat Egyptian giants Al Ahly 1-0 in the 2023 final and will seek back-to-back glory in South Africa.

The Algerian club's recent surge has been remarkable: the 2023 Confederation Cup, the 2023 Super Cup, and now another Confederation Cup crown — three trophies in a short span that underlines their continental ambitions.

Head-to-head record favours Sundowns

The two sides have crossed paths twice before in CAF competition, both times during the group stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2019/20. Sundowns won on each occasion — a 1-0 victory in Algiers and a 2-1 success back in Tshwane — though both clubs will argue that Sunday's stakes are on an entirely different level.

For Sundowns, the prospect of winning the Super Cup in front of their own supporters adds an extra layer of significance to an occasion that already carries continental prestige. For USM Alger, victory on foreign soil would underline just how far the club has come in a golden era of Algerian football.
