Manchester United Eye Kone and Baleba as Third Midfield Target

1 hour ago·2 min

Manchester United are giving serious consideration to Roma midfielder Manu Kone and Brighton & Hove Albion's Carlos Baleba as they press ahead with their search for a third midfield signing this summer.

Sky Sports News has long reported United's interest in Baleba, and despite a difficult campaign last season, the 22-year-old continues to attract attention from Michael Carrick's side. The club have taken steps to revisit a potential deal, though no formal contact between the two clubs has been established and agreement on a transfer fee remains an obstacle.

Kone emerges as alternative option

Kone has been identified as an alternative to Baleba, with Roma understood to be asking for a lower fee than Brighton would demand for their player. United have begun tentative discussions to gauge what a deal for the France international might involve.

The 25-year-old caught the eye at this summer's World Cup, further raising his profile across Europe. Sources in France have informed Sky Sports News that United currently hold the advantage in the race for Kone's signature, ahead of other interested clubs from across the continent.

However, Sky Sports News understands that reports suggesting a move is close to completion overstate the situation. No deal is imminent for either player.

No rush as United weigh their options

United are in no hurry to finalise a move for Kone or Baleba at this stage. Both players form part of a broader list of midfield targets the club is assessing, as manager Michael Carrick and his recruitment staff continue to evaluate the best available options. The club are also examining other areas of the squad in need of reinforcement before the window closes.
