Manchester United Target Former Manchester City Academy Product Felix Nmecha

1 hour ago·2 min

Manchester United have emerged as serious contenders to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, with the club's head of scouting Christoper Vivell reportedly making contact with the 25-year-old, who is currently representing Germany at the World Cup.

Nmecha is a familiar name in Manchester, having spent several years at the Manchester City academy before earning three senior appearances in cup competition. Released by City in 2021, he moved to Wolfsburg and then on to Borussia Dortmund, where he has established himself as a Germany international and drawn the attention of multiple Premier League clubs.

Newcastle United enter the race

Newcastle United have now joined the pursuit, according to reports from Germany, with manager Eddie Howe identifying Nmecha as a potential replacement for Bruno Guimarães, whose future at the club has looked uncertain in recent months.

However, German outlet Bild reports that Nmecha himself would prefer a move to one of the two Manchester clubs over a switch to the north east. The Champions League is likely a decisive factor — both Manchester United and Manchester City will compete in European football's elite competition next season, while Newcastle United will not.

Wider interest and contract situation

The competition for Nmecha's signature extends beyond England. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have both been linked with the Hamburg-born midfielder, who carries a Transfermarkt valuation of €50 million.

Manchester United's pursuit also comes in the context of uncertainty around Manuel Ugarte, who suffered an injury at the World Cup. Depending on the severity of that setback, the club may need additional reinforcements in midfield — even having already agreed a deal to sign Atalanta's Ederson.

Any transfer will ultimately hinge on Borussia Dortmund's willingness to sell. Nmecha signed a contract with the German club that runs until 2030, meaning Dortmund hold significant leverage in any negotiation.
