Enzo Maresca has embraced the weight of following Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, calling his appointment both a privilege and an exciting challenge as he prepares for his first season in charge.

Speaking at his opening press conference as City manager, the Italian was candid about the magnitude of stepping into Guardiola's shoes. "First of all, I have to say that it's a privilege," Maresca said. "I've said many times that I consider Pep probably the best coach in the world in the last 20, 25 years. But again, it's a challenge. It's nice. It's a privilege."

Maresca drew attention to the difficulties clubs can face when long-serving managers depart, pointing to how Manchester United and Arsenal each struggled following the exits of Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger respectively.

Stability as a foundation

For Maresca, Manchester City's managerial record offers genuine encouragement. The club has employed only three managers in 17 years — a level of continuity he believes gives the new regime every reason for confidence.

"I think the organisation is the main thing," he said. "They had three managers in 17 years. This is not normal, it doesn't happen often. So this is probably one of the things that I'm confident that we can do a great job."

Squad questions ahead of the new season

Maresca also addressed a number of player situations. Jack Grealish, who has returned from a loan spell at Everton, was described by the new manager as "a player with a big heart," though Maresca stopped short of confirming the winger's long-term future at the club.

On second-choice goalkeeper James Trafford, who has attracted interest from Leeds United, Maresca was similarly non-committal, saying "anything can happen" with the shot-stopper.

When pressed on further transfer activity following Elliot Anderson's arrival — reported at £116 million — Maresca acknowledged that more business could follow. "There are still a few things to do, but we are in the process of doing that," he said.

Manchester City depart on their pre-season tour next week, with a competitive opener against Arsenal arriving in just three weeks. For Maresca, the clock is already ticking.
