Mikel Merino has made a bold declaration: Arsenal, he insists, now possess the finest midfield in world football — and the arrival of Bruno Guimaraes is the reason why.

Guimaraes, 28, made his debut in Arsenal's 1-1 draw with Como on Wednesday and immediately drew warm praise from supporters and teammates. The Brazilian — signed for £75 million — is set to slot alongside Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze, Martin Zubimendi, and Myles Lewis-Skelly, who opened the scoring on the night.

Merino's confident assessment

World Cup winner Merino was unequivocal in his verdict. "He's proven how good he is over the years at Newcastle and he showed it again tonight," the Spaniard said.
