Premier League Shirts Set for a New Look as Gambling Sponsor Ban Takes Effect

Premier League kits are on the cusp of a dramatic transformation. Two decades after gambling companies were first permitted to display their logos on the front of football shirts, clubs have collectively voted to end that arrangement — and the effects are being felt across the division this summer.

Over the past two seasons, 11 of the 20 top-flight clubs carried the branding of a betting or casino company on their shirts. Some of those operators did not even hold licences to trade in the United Kingdom. That era is now over.

Who is filling the gap?

Eight clubs were required to secure a replacement front-of-shirt sponsor ahead of this season. Nottingham Forest and Sunderland have yet to confirm new arrangements, and Chelsea — a club that has rarely carried a prominent front-of-shirt sponsor in recent years — remain unsigned.

Kieran Maguire, professor of football finance at the University of Liverpool, told BBC Sport that the delay at some clubs reflects a mismatch between what clubs believe they are worth and what sponsors are prepared to pay.
