Merino's Father Sets Out Conditions for Arsenal Exit as Atletico Madrid Circle

The father of Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has publicly outlined the circumstances under which his son would consider leaving the club, with Atletico Madrid reported to be eyeing a move for the Spain international.
Angel Miguel — himself a former professional footballer — spoke last month on the conditions that would prompt his son to return to La Liga. According to Angel Miguel, Merino would need to be assured of continuing to compete at the highest level, specifically in the UEFA Champions League, to maintain the motivation required for a move.
A cult hero with limited starts
Since joining Arsenal in the summer of 2024, Merino has earned considerable admiration among supporters — most memorably stepping up as a makeshift centre-forward during injury crises and contributing decisive goals. Yet he has not cemented a regular starting role in manager Mikel Arteta's midfield, making just one Premier League start this season.
His Champions League involvement has been more pronounced, with three starts in Arsenal's four group-stage matches, where Arteta has deployed him as an alternative No.10 option to Martin Odegaard. Despite the limited league minutes, Merino has featured in every fixture across all competitions so far this season, with Arteta frequently relying on his hold-up play and close control to close out matches.
National team concerns
The reduced role at club level has had consequences at international level too. Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has shifted Merino to a substitute's role with the national team, and the midfielder accumulated just 193 minutes at the World Cup. Angel Miguel acknowledged that his son's situation at Arsenal is affecting his standing in the Spain squad.
Spanish outlet La Razon has reported that Atletico Madrid are interested in bringing Merino back to La Liga on loan, with a purchase option attached. The 30-year-old is valued at €25 million by Transfermarkt.
Arsenal's position
Merino's contract at the Emirates Stadium runs until 2028, and Arsenal are under no financial pressure to sell. The club regard him as a key squad member despite his limited starts. He is part of Arteta's leadership group and has captained the side in Odegaard's absence on occasion this season.
With Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Bruno Guimaraes all competing for midfield places, regular starts are difficult to come by. No discussions over a contract extension are currently taking place. Arsenal host Hull City this weekend as Premier League action resumes.
