Mohamed Salah is poised to sign for Turkish club Trabzonspor on a free transfer, ending his association with Liverpool after nine years at Anfield.

The 34-year-old and Liverpool reached a mutual agreement to terminate his contract a year ahead of schedule — a deal he had only signed in April 2025 — following a turbulent final season that saw him dropped and embroiled in a public dispute with then head coach Arne Slot.

The end of a remarkable era

Salah departs Anfield as one of the club's most decorated players, having won seven major trophies during his time on Merseyside. His 257 goals in 442 appearances leave him as Liverpool's third-highest goalscorer of all time.

Clubs in Saudi Arabia had long been touted as the frontrunner to land Salah, and that appeared the most probable outcome when he delivered a headline-grabbing interview after being dropped during a match at Leeds. Fewer than three years ago, Liverpool had turned down a £150 million bid from Al Ittihad for his services.

Instead, Salah will now test himself in the Turkish Süper Lig. Trabzonspor, who finished third in Turkey last season, are set to feature in the UEFA Europa League playoffs — a European stage that could offer Salah meaningful competition in the next chapter of his career.
