Mason Mount faces a race against time to be fit for Manchester United's pre-season fixture against Leeds at Croke Park on Wednesday, after picking up a foot injury during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Paris St-Germain in Gothenburg.

The midfielder was caught by a challenge in the early minutes of the PSG game and did not return for the second half. Head coach Michael Carrick insisted the decision to withdraw Mount was purely precautionary, and the 27-year-old was seen walking without difficulty after the final whistle. However, it is understood Mount has not trained since the injury and is unlikely to feature against Leeds.

His availability for United's final pre-season test — against Ruben Amorim's AC Milan in Wroclaw on Saturday — also remains uncertain.

A positive note in Dublin

Despite Mount's setback, the camp in the Republic of Ireland has brought encouraging signs. Argentina centre-back Lisandro Martinez has been taking part in training sessions after sustaining an injury during the World Cup final, offering United a significant boost at the back.

England internationals Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo have also been on the training pitch this week. Whether Carrick will consider them ready to play against Leeds remains to be seen, given the limited time they have had to build their fitness.

History in the making at Croke Park

Wednesday's match carries extra significance beyond pre-season preparation. The fixture will mark the first occasion that two English association football clubs have competed at Croke Park — the iconic home of the Gaelic Athletic Association, one of Ireland's most celebrated sporting venues.

Mount had been among United's standout performers in the opening three pre-season matches, excelling in the number eight role with new signing Andrey Santos operating just behind him. His injury is therefore a concern for Carrick as competitive fixtures draw closer.
