Paul Pogba looks set to leave Monaco before the end of his current contract, with sources telling the BBC that talks over an early termination are already under way and expected to conclude shortly.

The former France international joined the Ligue 1 club last summer following his return to professional football after serving a doping ban. He signed a two-year deal running through to the end of next season, but that arrangement now appears unlikely to be honoured in full.

Monaco have yet to issue a public statement on the matter.

A difficult spell in the principality

Pogba's debut campaign at Monaco was plagued by injury, limiting his involvement across the season. Ahead of this campaign, there was cautious optimism that the midfielder would finally return to consistent action — but that hope has since faded.

A managerial change at the club has been a decisive factor. Filipe Luis replaced Sebastien Pocognoli in the dugout, and the new coaching setup is believed to be considering a different approach in central midfield — one that may not include Pogba.

Background: the doping case

Pogba was provisionally suspended for four years in 2024 after testing positive for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). The failed test occurred in August 2023, with the result confirmed in February 2024.

The 2018 World Cup winner consistently denied any intentional wrongdoing, insisting he had been given a supplement without being made aware it contained a banned substance.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport later reduced his ban to 18 months, clearing him to return to professional football in March 2025, paving the way for his move to Monaco.
