Netherlands vs Morocco: World Cup 2026 Round of 32 Preview and How to Watch

1 hour ago·3 min

Two continental champions collide in Monterrey, Mexico, as Netherlands take on Morocco in the round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026 — a fixture that ranks among the most compelling of this stage of the tournament.

FIFA's live rankings place the sides just one spot apart — Netherlands at No. 7 and Morocco at No. 6 — underlining just how evenly matched this contest is expected to be.

A history revisited

The only previous competitive encounter between these nations came at the 1994 World Cup, the last time the United States hosted the tournament. Netherlands edged that group-stage meeting thanks to a late Bryan Roy winner, finishing top of a section where three sides ended level on six points. Morocco, meanwhile, exited bottom of the group without a single victory across their three matches.

Thirty-two years on, the Atlas Lions arrive as a transformed force. Morocco claimed a place in World Cup folklore when they became the first African nation to reach the semi-finals, at the 2022 tournament in Qatar. They have also claimed the Africa Cup of Nations twice — once by winning it on the pitch, and once after Senegal were stripped of the title following the most recent edition in January.

How Netherlands have performed

Ronald Koeman's side drew with Japan and beat Sweden convincingly before closing out the group stage with a 3-1 victory over Tunisia in Kansas City. No team at this World Cup has scored more than the Oranje's 10 goals, and Brian Brobbey — the Sunderland forward — has been central to that attacking output, netting three times since being handed the No. 9 role from the outset against Sweden.

How Morocco have performed

Morocco opened with an impressive draw against Brazil in New Jersey before defeating Scotland in Boston and Haiti in Atlanta. Ismael Saibari, who is set to join Bayern Munich, scored in all three group matches. Captain Achraf Hakimi has provided consistent drive from full-back, while teenage midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi of Lille has drawn widespread attention with his performances in the middle of the park.

What comes next

Canada, who eliminated South Africa in the first round of 32 match — ending the prospect of an all-African last-16 clash — await the winners in Houston on July 4. The opportunity to face a co-host nation on neutral ground is a rare one in World Cup football.

This match in Monterrey is also the first for both Netherlands and Morocco outside the United States at this tournament.
