Newcastle Eye Nmecha as Arsenal Test Waters Over Bruno Guimaraes

1 hour ago·1 min

Newcastle are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, according to Sky Sports News, with the club simultaneously working to fend off an informal approach from Arsenal for captain Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle's interest in Nmecha

Manager Eddie Howe is an admirer of the 25-year-old Germany international, who is the younger brother of Leeds United's Lukas Nmecha. Howe considered bringing him to St James' Park back in 2023 before ultimately choosing Sandro Tonali from AC Milan instead.

That same summer, Felix Nmecha completed a move to Borussia Dortmund from Wolfsburg — and memorably scored against Newcastle in the UEFA Champions League at St James' Park.

Nmecha's Dortmund contract runs until 2030 and contains an €85m (£75.5m) buy-out clause. Newcastle's recruitment model means they would look to pay considerably less than that figure, making a deal difficult to conclude unless Dortmund lower their valuation.

However, the situation could shift if Sandro Tonali departs. The Italy midfielder, valued at around £100m, has attracted an £80m bid from Tottenham Hotspur — which Newcastle turned down — while Manchester City also remain interested.

Arsenal's pursuit of Guimaraes

Arsenal have explored the possibility of signing Guimaraes this summer, with the club submitting an informal proposal for the Brazilian midfielder. Newcastle's position, however, is firm: they do not want to sell the 28-year-old and will not entertain bids.

Guimaraes, who has been captain at St James' Park, is contracted until 2028. He joined Newcastle in 2022 from Lyon for an initial £35m and has since made 195 appearances for the club, scoring 31 goals. Arsenal regard him as one of several midfield targets, with movement expected in that department at the Emirates this summer.

Carragher: I can understand if Bruno is frustrated

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher offered his perspective on the situation, suggesting Newcastle may be entering another period of transition.
