Newcastle United are edging closer to the signing of Marseille midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, a move that mirrors Chelsea's decision to bring in Jordan Henderson earlier this summer — and one that is rooted in the same logic.

On the surface, the 31-year-old Dane appears an unusual fit for a club that has largely prioritised youth in its summer recruitment, adding teenagers and early-twenty-somethings such as 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba. But context matters, and Newcastle's current situation demands experience.

A squad stripped of its leaders

In the space of a few weeks, Newcastle have shed the core of their dressing room hierarchy. Bruno Guimaraes completed a £75 million transfer to Arsenal last week, Kieran Trippier departed at the start of the summer, and Sandro Tonali has moved to Tottenham Hotspur. In one stroke, the club lost their captain, their vice-captain, and a pivotal midfield figure.

New head coach Matthias Jaissle — one of the youngest managers in the Premier League — now faces the challenge of steering a squad that is talented but thin on natural leaders. His maiden top-flight campaign requires more than technical quality; it requires authority and experience in the dressing room.

Why Hojbjerg makes sense

Hojbjerg brings 254 Premier League appearances to the table, earned across spells at Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur, and is widely regarded as a model professional. The Denmark captain would not arrive as a like-for-like replacement for Guimaraes or Tonali in a footballing sense. His role would be closer to that of a steadying force — think Granit Xhaka's influence at Sunderland, or Henderson anchoring Chelsea's youthful group.

The parallel with Chelsea is instructive. Xabi Alonso identified Henderson as the experience needed to provide structure and authority around a squad built on youth. Newcastle, it appears, are applying the same thinking with Hojbjerg — a steady hand to help Jaissle navigate what promises to be a demanding transition season.

The captaincy question remains open. Local favourite and England international Dan Burn is a credible candidate for the armband, but were Hojbjerg to arrive, his leadership pedigree would make him an immediate contender as well.
