Stanley Nwabali marked his return to competitive football in style, winning the Man of the Match award as Chippa United drew 0-0 with Golden Arrows in their opening Premier Soccer League (PSL) fixture of the 2026/27 season on Saturday.

The Nigeria international had been absent from competitive action for eight months before this appearance, making his commanding display all the more remarkable. Despite Golden Arrows dominating possession and registering the most shots on goal, Nwabali stood firm and ensured Chippa United left the contest with a point.

An outstanding display in goal

According to Fotmob, Nwabali finished the game with a 9.1 rating — the highest of any player on the pitch. He made six saves, three high claims, three clearances, and 12 ball recoveries across the 90 minutes.

His most decisive intervention came in the 60th minute, when he produced a double save to deny Ronaldo Van Neel and keep the scoreline level. It was the kind of moment that underscored exactly why Chippa United brought him back.

A difficult road back

Nwabali's return to Chippa United has been far from straightforward. He departed the club following Nigeria's Africa Cup of Nations 2025 campaign in Morocco, with both parties agreeing to terminate his contract by mutual consent.

His re-signing last month came after a turbulent personal period that included the public disclosure of his mental health struggles, which followed the tragic loss of both his parents. The goalkeeper's willingness to speak openly about those difficulties has drawn widespread admiration from fans and the football community alike.

Back in the Super Eagles picture?

Nwabali missed the Super Eagles squad for the Unity Cup as well as June's double-header friendlies against Poland and Portugal. However, a return to form at club level could earn him a recall for Nigeria's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures in September, should he maintain this level of performance.

Chippa United, who finished last season just four points above the relegation zone, will host Richards Bay on August 11 as they look to build on their opening-day point.
