1 hour ago·1 min

Patrick Vieira has been named head coach of Senegal's Teranga Lions, following the departure of Pape Thiaw after the team's early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) confirmed on Monday that Vieira's appointment was passed unanimously, describing the decision as part of a broader effort to strengthen the technical leadership of the national team and help it reach its sporting ambitions.

Contractual and administrative details are still being finalised between the FSF and Vieira's representatives. The federation added that a formal presentation date and further details on the next steps of the appointment will be communicated in due course.

A decorated player, now a coach

Vieira, 50, is best known as one of the most influential midfielders of his generation. He was a central figure in the France squad that lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy on home soil in 1998.

His club career included a landmark stint at Arsenal, where he captained the side through one of the most celebrated periods in the club's history.

Since transitioning into management, Vieira has taken charge of Crystal Palace, Nice, and Strasbourg, accumulating experience across both England and France before his arrival in international football.

His appointment signals the start of a new era for the Senegalese senior national team as they look to rebuild following their premature exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
