Thousands of families in the Philadelphia area have received fresh food recovered from matchday operations at Philadelphia Stadium during the FIFA World Cup 2026, in an initiative that redirected surplus provisions away from landfill and toward households facing food insecurity.
The stadium hosted six matches during the tournament, drawing an average of 68,316 fans per game. Rather than discarding leftover fresh produce and dry goods, organisers worked with catering partner Aramark and local food recovery organisations to channel those supplies directly into the community.
A 24-hour race against the clock
Gary Bye, Sustainability and Human Rights Manager at Philadelphia Stadium, described the programme as part of a broader FIFA sustainability effort.
