The first threshold: five yellow cards

Three players have already collected three bookings in just the first four rounds of matches this season — meaning each must avoid two further cautions before the halfway stage.

Later thresholds and heavier punishments

Once a club's 19th match has passed, the threshold rises sharply. A player reaching 10 yellow cards before the end of their club's 32nd league fixture will face a two-match suspension. The cut-off points continue to escalate from there.

A player who reaches 15 cautions receives a three-match ban. Should a player accumulate 20 yellow cards, their punishment is no longer automatic — it is instead referred to and determined by a regulatory commission, which can impose whatever sanction it considers appropriate.

Crucially, none of these thresholds reset during the season. They remain active until the final Premier League match of the campaign.

Rules in the Championship, League One, and League Two

The English Football League operates under similar principles, though with one key difference: those divisions each have 46 rounds of matches rather than 38. As a result, the 10-yellow-card threshold applies up to the end of each club's 37th match, rather than the 32nd.

Unlike the Premier League, yellow card tallies in the Championship, League One, and League Two reset at the conclusion of the regular season and do not carry over into the play-offs.
