Scouts from clubs across Africa, Europe, and Asia will attend every knockout stage match at the 1xCup 2026, Lagos's premier grassroots football tournament, the competition's organizers confirmed on Thursday ahead of the group stage draw at Providence Hotel, Ikeja.

The announcement signals a major opportunity for amateur footballers in Nigeria. Every player who reaches the knockout rounds will compete under the watchful eye of professional scouts, giving grassroots talent a direct route toward signing a first professional contract.

What is at stake

The 1xCup 2026 is now in its fourth season and has established itself as the defining platform for Nigeria's top amateur clubs. Following Friday's draw, the 24 qualified clubs will be split into six groups of four teams each, competing for places in the knockout stage — and ultimately for a share of a ₦20 million prize pool.

According to the organizers, the qualifying rounds delivered "loads of thrilling moments and unpredictable outcomes," with clubs battling to represent their communities and earn their place among the tournament's 24 strongest sides.

Diadem Stallion: from street kickabouts to the Nigerian FA Cup

Among the clubs capturing attention this season is Diadem Stallion SC, whose story encapsulates everything the 1xCup stands for. What began in the 1990s as a group of boys kicking a ball around local streets — founded by Baba Oma with the ambition of uplifting his community — has grown into a structured football organization with a clear development strategy.

Olu Olorunyomi later took the helm and transformed training sessions into something beyond football: a school of discipline, character, and self-belief. He guided young players along that path until 2019.

In 2020, the club was formally registered with the CAC, and two years later made its debut in the Nigerian FA Cup — a remarkable leap for a side that began on the streets of Lagos.

A dark horse with ambitions to match

Diadem Stallion first turned heads at the 1xCup 2024, advancing from the qualifiers all the way to the quarter-finals and announcing themselves as genuine contenders in Nigeria's grassroots game.

The club carried that momentum into the 1xCup 2026, opening their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Zenith Emperor. The decisive goal came from Jimoh Jelili, and the result moved Diadem Stallion one step closer to the group stage. It was a performance that underlined the team's resilience and their belief that this season, the dream can become reality.
