England defender Jarell Quansah has been handed a two-match suspension by FIFA following his red card in England's last-16 World Cup victory over Mexico, ruling him out of the quarter-final against Norway and a potential semi-final beyond that.
FIFA's disciplinary committee determined that Quansah breached article 14 of the FIFA code of conduct — the provision covering serious foul play, which carries a minimum two-game ban. The decision extends what had initially been a standard one-game suspension into a punishment covering England's next two knockout fixtures.
The incident that triggered the ban
Quansah was operating at right-back when, in the 54th minute at the Azteca, he slid into Mexico's Jesus Gallardo in a challenge reviewed by VAR. The on-field referee had not penalised the tackle, but the VAR recommended a review and a straight red card was subsequently issued.
