Queiroz Steps Down as Ghana Coach Following World Cup Elimination

1 hour ago·1 min

Carlos Queiroz has resigned as head coach of Ghana's Black Stars after the team's first-round exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing a brief but eventful tenure to a close.

Ghana were knocked out of the tournament following a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in Kansas City. The Black Stars managed only eight attempts on goal throughout the match — a performance that underlined the difficulties Queiroz faced in his short time in charge.

Queiroz's farewell message

Speaking via beIN Sports, the experienced coach reflected on his time with the squad: "I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more."

Queiroz, who previously guided Iran at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, also used his departure to set out a vision for Ghana's football future. "The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch," he said.

The former Real Madrid coach and Manchester United assistant added that ambition must remain constant: "Reaching a higher level should never be the destination — it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions."

He called for structural investment off the field as well: "Black Stars success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana's extraordinary football talent."

A short spell in charge

Queiroz was appointed only in April of this year, stepping in after Otto Addo was dismissed. His time at the helm lasted just months before the World Cup exit brought the arrangement to an abrupt end.
