Real Madrid Deny Any Interest in Signing Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea

2 hours ago·2 min

Real Madrid have released an official statement flatly denying any pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, insisting the club has made no effort — direct or indirect — to sign the Argentina international this summer.

Reports had circulated suggesting Real were keen on the 25-year-old, particularly after Chelsea missed out on European qualification last season, with well-placed sources indicating Fernandez himself was eager to move to the Spanish capital. Real dismissed those claims entirely.

"In light of the reports and statements that have appeared in recent days regarding an alleged interest from Real Madrid in the player Enzo Fernandez, the club wishes to state that it has not made any effort, either direct or indirect, to sign the aforementioned player and, likewise, has no intention of undertaking such an operation," the club's statement read.

Chelsea have confirmed no formal club-to-club approach has been received from Real. The London club values Fernandez at £120m should genuine interest emerge, but are not looking to sell and view him as a key figure under incoming head coach Xabi Alonso.

Fernandez's turbulent season at Stamford Bridge

Fernandez arrived at Chelsea from Benfica in February 2023 for what was then a British record fee of £107m, shortly after helping Argentina claim a third World Cup triumph at the end of 2022. Since then, he has collected the Europa Conference League and Club World Cup with the club, and contributed 15 goals across all competitions last season.

His future at Chelsea was thrown into doubt in April when previous head coach Liam Rosenior handed him a two-game ban after he admitted he did not know whether he would stay and declared he would "love" to live in Madrid. Despite that turbulence, Chelsea are committed to retaining him as a central figure in Alonso's squad.

Fernandez continues to feature prominently for Argentina at this summer's World Cup, underlining his status as one of the competition's standout midfielders.

Real's second denial in as many months

Real's statement was not their first of this type in recent weeks. Last month, the 15-time European champions issued a similar denial regarding reported interest in Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise, who has caught the eye at the World Cup with France.

Real have already conducted business with Chelsea this summer, completing the signing of Spain left-back Marc Cucurella in a deal worth up to £51.8m. In their latest statement, they were careful to express "utmost respect" for both Fernandez and Chelsea, describing the relationship between the two clubs as "excellent."

"Real Madrid regrets that, despite the clarity of the facts and the lack of any action on the part of the club, information continues to be disseminated that does not correspond to reality and that only contributes to generating confusion among fans and unnecessarily harming the entities and people involved," the statement concluded.
