Real Madrid have emerged as the frontrunners to sign RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, according to Sky Sports' sources in Germany, after an opening bid of £85.4m (€100m) was knocked back by the Bundesliga club.

Leipzig are holding out for considerably more than that figure for their 19-year-old sensation, but Real have moved swiftly to agree personal terms with Diomande — a significant step forward in negotiations.

PSG preference, but Real make their move

Earlier this summer, Diomande had signalled a desire to join Paris Saint-Germain and had even agreed a contract with the French club running until 2031. However, Real Madrid's pursuit has now shifted the dynamics significantly.

The pursuit comes amid uncertainty surrounding Vinicius Junior's future at the club, with Jose Mourinho's side having already been among the most active this transfer window — bringing in Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, and Marc Cucurella.

Liverpool have also registered their interest in Diomande, though their stance is firm: they will not exceed £85m. Arsenal and Manchester City are similarly keeping a close eye on developments.

Should Liverpool's £85m valuation translate into a firm offer, it would already shatter the Premier League's record fee paid for a teenage player — the £58.9m Manchester United spent to bring Leny Yoro from Lille in the summer of 2024.

Sources close to potential negotiations describe the situation as an open race, with six weeks of the transfer window still remaining.

From Leganes trials to the world's biggest clubs

Diomande's rise has been nothing short of remarkable. Just a year ago, his entire senior career consisted of roughly six starts for Leganes during their ill-fated LaLiga relegation campaign. He scored in two of those outings — against Espanyol and Valladolid — in a team that failed to score in the other four.

That was enough to convince RB Leipzig to spend €20m on him. Since arriving in the Bundesliga, Diomande has been a revelation — electric, unpredictable, and virtually unplayable when in full stride.
