Wayne Rooney has offered a deeply personal perspective on Jarell Quansah's red card against Mexico, drawing on his own painful experience of being dismissed at a World Cup — and expressing nothing but sympathy for the young England defender.
Quansah was shown a straight red card for a dangerous high tackle on Mexico's Jesus Gallardo during a pulsating round-of-16 clash at the Estadio Azteca, with England leading 2-1 at the time. Despite being reduced to ten men, Thomas Tuchel's side held on to claim a 3-2 victory — though Quansah was forced to watch the drama unfold on a television screen from inside the dressing room.
Rooney's own World Cup nightmare
Rooney knows that precise feeling all too well. In the 2006 World Cup quarter-finals, he was sent off against Portugal for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho — at almost the same stage of a knockout match — with his then-Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo famously caught winking at the camera after the dismissal. England went on to lose that tie on penalties.
