Savio Shines on Debut as Spurs Dismantle Charlton 5-1 in Carabao Cup

Savio announced himself to the Tottenham Hotspur faithful in emphatic fashion, scoring and creating a goal on his debut as Spurs overwhelmed Charlton Athletic 5-1 to advance into the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

The Brazilian winger, who completed an £85 million move from Manchester City just one day before the match, entered the pitch in the 71st minute and needed just 11 minutes to leave his mark on the contest.

Roberto De Zerbi had named a strong starting lineup — featuring several senior players — in a clear statement of intent following Tottenham Hotspur's sobering Premier League opening-day defeat to Brentford.

Moore and Solanke set the tone

It was 19-year-old Mikey Moore who pierced a resilient Charlton backline, driving the ball past goalkeeper Tiernan Brooks to register his first goal for the club in the 41st minute. Dominic Solanke then doubled the advantage with a composed finish in first-half stoppage time after the visitors failed to deal with pressure on their own box.

Danso and Savio light up the second half

Kevin Danso, one of several high-profile substitutes introduced after the hour mark, made an instant contribution — nodding home from a Mateus Fernandes free-kick with his first touch to put Tottenham Hotspur three goals to the good in the 67th minute.

The headline moment arrived when Savio cut inside from the right flank and dispatched a composed strike into the bottom corner in the 82nd minute, sending the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium into raptures. Three minutes later, his shot deflected off veteran defender Ben Davies and crept into the net for a fifth, wrapping up a commanding win.

Charlton Athletic grabbed a late consolation through a Lloyd Jones header in the 87th minute, but the result was already beyond doubt. Spurs advance into the Carabao Cup third-round draw in commanding style.
