Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has called out captain Bruno Fernandes for publicly criticising his teammates after the Red Devils were beaten 2-0 by Hull City on the opening day of the season.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast — sponsored by Midnite — Scholes argued that Fernandes was in no position to point fingers at others given his own underwhelming display in that match. The United skipper gave away cheap fouls and struggled to hold onto the ball throughout the game.

"Especially when you perform the way he did as well, I think it's probably best to keep your mouth shut. He didn't have his best performance either," Scholes said alongside co-host Dion Dublin.

Fernandes had suggested after the defeat that Manchester United were repeating the same errors that had plagued them throughout the previous season. Scholes pushed back on that, questioning exactly what mistakes the captain was referring to.

"I'd be interested to know what he means by them. What mistakes were they giving away?" the former midfielder said.

Scholes also rounds on Shaw

Scholes did not limit his criticism to Fernandes alone. He also took aim at Luke Shaw for publicly questioning the club's pre-season preparation ahead of the new campaign.

Shaw had said after the Hull City defeat: "It's not us and we knew it was coming" — a comment Scholes appeared to find equally unhelpful from a player who should be leading by example.

The former midfielder's message was clear: in difficult moments, Manchester United's senior players must shoulder responsibility privately rather than air grievances through the media.
