Simeone Calls Alvarez Extraordinary Amid Barcelona Transfer Links

1 hour ago·2 min

Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has spoken warmly of Julian Alvarez, calling the Argentine striker extraordinary and one of the five best footballers in the world — even as transfer speculation links him to a move to Barcelona.

Simeone made the comments after running into Alvarez ahead of an upcoming match, noting the 25-year-old was in fine health and fully recovered from an ankle complaint.

"He's an extraordinary player, the best footballer we have at Atlético de Madrid — his stats speak for themselves. He's had a very good run of form and has brought something special to the team," Simeone said.

Focus on the next match

The Atlético manager urged Alvarez to block out the noise surrounding his future and concentrate on the next fixture, insisting the best path forward is one match at a time.

"His future, above all, lies in tomorrow's match, and the best thing for him is to focus on that — not to dwell on all these issues that have obviously come to light — so that they don't cause him any confusion, and things will sort themselves out as they always have in life," Simeone added.

Simeone also confirmed that, should Alvarez remain at the club, Atlético plan to build their entire attacking structure around him — a clear signal of just how central he is to the manager's vision.

Transfer saga intensifies

Reports suggest Alvarez has communicated to Atlético that he wishes to leave the club, driven by a desire to fulfil a long-held dream of representing Barcelona. Despite that, Atlético are reluctant to sanction his departure.

The striker has been in outstanding form this season, recording 20 goals in 49 appearances across all competitions during the 2025/26 campaign — numbers that underline why Atlético are in no hurry to lose him.

With the FIFA World Cup 2026 on the horizon, Alvarez's situation at club level will attract even greater scrutiny in the months ahead, as he looks to head into the tournament in top form.
