Tottenham Break Club Record With £100m Tonali Signing From Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur have secured the signing of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali in a deal that could reach £100m, making it the biggest transfer in the club's history.

The 26-year-old completes a move to north London after three seasons at St. James' Park. Spurs saw an initial bid of around £80m turned down by Newcastle before the two clubs agreed on a structure worth £92.5m up front, with a further £7.5m in add-ons.

A second major arrival at Spurs

Tonali becomes the second high-profile signing of the summer window for Tottenham, joining Mateus Fernandes, who arrived from West Ham United for £85m. Combined with the anticipated arrival of centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, the club's total summer outlay could reach £237m.

Defenders Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have also joined on free transfers, underlining the scale of Tottenham's rebuild under manager Roberto de Zerbi.

Tonali's journey to Spurs

The Italy international first moved to English football when Newcastle United signed him from AC Milan for £55m in July 2023. His debut season was disrupted after the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) handed him a 10-month ban for breaching betting regulations.

On his return, Tonali established himself as one of the Premier League's most influential midfielders and played a central role as Newcastle United claimed the Carabao Cup in 2025 — the club's first major trophy in 70 years.

De Zerbi's long-held target

Tottenham boss Roberto de Zerbi had identified Tonali as a player to watch during his time managing Sassuolo in Serie A, when the midfielder was still making his name in Italian football. The Italian connection between manager and player is understood to have been a significant factor in the move.
