Troost-Ekong Backs England to Edge Norway in World Cup 2026 Quarter-Final

1 hour ago·2 min

Former Nigeria international William Troost-Ekong has tipped England to defeat Norway in their FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final, scheduled for Saturday evening at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

How both sides reached the last eight

England advanced to the quarter-finals after a 3-2 victory over co-hosts Mexico in the Round of 16 — a hard-fought win that came despite a red card for Jarell Quansah. Thomas Tuchel's side had earlier beaten DR Congo to set up that last-16 tie, making Miami the latest stop on what is shaping up to be a deep tournament run.

Norway's path was far more dramatic. Erling Haaland delivered a sensational double to stun five-time champions Brazil 2-1 in one of the most stunning upsets of the competition. It is Norway's first ever World Cup quarter-final appearance, ending a 28-year absence from the tournament.

Troost-Ekong's verdict

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Troost-Ekong argued that England hold a narrow but clear advantage heading into the tie. "I think that England probably has just an edge over them. Norway has already done something special," he said.

The former Super Eagles captain was full of praise for Harry Kane, a former Tottenham Hotspur teammate. "A very refined striker. Sometimes I don't think he gets more credit than he deserves because he has been so consistent over the years."

Troost-Ekong also highlighted the threat posed by Jude Bellingham alongside Kane. "Not just him alone — we also have Jude Bellingham, who can make all the difference," he added.

On the prospect of a Kane versus Haaland duel, Troost-Ekong was unequivocal. "For Kane and Haaland, I think it's going to be a real battle. I don't think it's going to be a draw or goalless, but I think England will surely edge it."
