Trump to Attend World Cup 2026 Final and Co-Present Trophy, Infantino Confirms

1 hour ago·1 min

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed that U.S. president Donald Trump will be present at the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Speaking on Fox & Friends, Infantino revealed that he and Trump will watch the match together and jointly hand the trophy to the winning team. "We will be together with the president [Trump] enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course, together," Infantino said. "We are together all the time."

The FIFA chief credited Trump's direct involvement as essential to staging the tournament on U.S. soil, suggesting the event would not have been possible without his engagement and support during his current mandate.

Shadow of the Club World Cup controversy

The announcement comes against the backdrop of an awkward moment at the FIFA Club World Cup last summer in New Jersey, when Trump presented the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James following Chelsea's victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

Trump's reluctance to leave the stage meant he ended up joining Chelsea's celebrations, standing alongside players who appeared visibly surprised by his continued presence.

The decision to have Infantino and Trump co-present the World Cup trophy is not without historical precedent — Heads of State have handed over the prize on several previous occasions, though recent editions have seen FIFA presidents, including Infantino and his predecessor Sepp Blatter, take on that role.
