Thomas Tuchel has played down the controversy surrounding his substitutions in England's 2-1 FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final defeat by Argentina, insisting that the overwhelming majority of supporters do not raise the issue when they meet him.

"99.9 per cent of the fans don't talk about substitutions, tactical tweaks or tactical details," Tuchel told reporters. "They speak about where they watched the Mexico game, and they speak about the second-half energy of the Croatia match."

Memories over tactics

The England manager said fans remember the tournament through shared human moments rather than in-game decisions. "They speak about how nerve-racking it was to watch our match against Congo and where they celebrated. This is the feedback I get. This is what we created, and how it should be," he said.

Tuchel added that the World Cup's deeper value lies in the connections it forges. "This is what a World Cup is for: to connect with people and give them experiences they do not forget. It makes me proud, it makes me happy. Even if it's just in a cab, at a coffee shop or in the supermarket, you share these little moments and understand that it actually meant something."

England had led through Anthony Gordon's second-half strike before Enzo Fernandez levelled and Lautaro Martinez completed Argentina's comeback. Tuchel's decision to introduce three defenders before Fernandez's equaliser drew fierce criticism, as England absorbed relentless Argentine pressure before ultimately conceding.

"It showed that what the players built was transmitted, and it's what we want to build on," Tuchel said, framing the tournament as a foundation rather than a failure.

Backing from above before Mexico clash

Tuchel also disclosed that the Football Association had assured him of his future before England's group-stage match against Mexico — long before the semi-final controversy erupted. That confidence from his employers never wavered, he said, even as scrutiny of his tactical choices intensified after the Argentina defeat.

"I felt the full support from all my bosses through the whole tournament. Before the Mexico game they told me: we know anything can happen in a football match but don't worry, we can see what's going on," he explained.

"I felt this kind of freedom to take my choices and coach freely. There was never a doubt in my mind we'd continue together and there was clearly never a doubt in their mind. Reflection is sometimes necessary to get better and experience is a crucial part."

Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold have since been recalled to the England squad as Tuchel makes eight changes ahead of the next international window.
