UEFA Condemns FIFA Over Balogun Ban Suspension Ahead of USA vs Belgium Clash

46 minutes ago·2 min

UEFA has condemned FIFA in the strongest possible terms, accusing the global football governing body of having "crossed a red line" by allowing USA striker Folarin Balogun to play in Tuesday's World Cup last-16 tie against Belgium, despite serving a one-match suspension.

Balogun, who has netted three times at this World Cup, was dismissed in USA's last-32 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina after catching Tarik Muharemovic with his studs. The challenge earned him an automatic one-match ban, which would have ruled him out of the knockout encounter with Belgium.

The White House intervenes

FIFA overturned the ban following a phone call in which The White House asked FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review the red card, according to a source who spoke anonymously to The Associated Press.

FIFA subsequently suspended Balogun's one-match ban for a probationary period of one year, making him eligible to face Belgium.

UEFA's damning statement

UEFA issued a forceful statement, calling the reversal an affront to the sport's foundational principles.

"Yesterday's decision to suspend for a probationary period of a year the implementation of the one-match automatic suspension following the red card issued to the player Folarin Balogun crossed a red line. When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined."

UEFA argued that an automatic one-match ban following a red card is not subject to interpretation or discretion — it is a principle embedded in the laws of football. The governing body also warned that the decision sets a dangerous precedent within the ongoing tournament, where other players have already served identical suspensions without any intervention.

"We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision."

Belgian FA also astonished

The Belgian FA added its voice to the growing chorus of opposition, stating it is "astonished" by FIFA's ruling and is currently "investigating all potential options" in response.

UEFA's statement underlined the broader stakes, noting that football's universal appeal rests on every match — from amateur kickabouts to the World Cup — being governed by the same laws. Any deviation, particularly at the sport's showpiece event, risks doing lasting damage to the game's credibility worldwide.
