Vinicius Junior has committed his future to Real Madrid, signing a new six-year contract with the Spanish club despite reported interest from Arsenal.

Talks between Vinicius and Real Madrid representatives took place at the club's training ground on Wednesday, with those discussions — focused on extending a deal that had less than 12 months remaining — described as positive. The outcome confirms what Sky Sports News had already reported earlier this summer: the Brazilian forward was staying put.

Mourinho factor proves decisive

A key element in Vinicius choosing to remain at Real Madrid is his strong bond with new head coach Jose Mourinho. Sky Sports News understands that Mourinho was eager to keep Vinicius as one of his top Galacticos, and that relationship played a significant role in steering talks toward a positive conclusion.

In a statement marking the renewal, Real Madrid declared: "Vinicius Jr has become one of the most important players in one of the most successful periods in our history."

Arsenal turn attention to Guimaraes

While Arsenal's pursuit of Vinicius has come to nothing, the Premier League champions are moving quickly elsewhere in the transfer market. The club have agreed a £75m fee with Newcastle for captain Bruno Guimaraes, with the 28-year-old undergoing a medical in London on Thursday.

Guimaraes had signalled his desire to join Arsenal earlier this summer, and though Newcastle rejected Arsenal's opening bid, a deal now appears imminent. The midfielder joined Newcastle in 2022 from Lyon for £40m and has made 195 appearances for the club, scoring 31 goals.

Should the transfer be completed as anticipated, Newcastle will have raised more than £240m from player sales this summer alone — a remarkable figure that also includes Anthony Gordon's £69.3m move to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali's £100m switch to Spurs. Manager Eddie Howe has also departed St James' Park in what has been a turbulent few months on Tyneside.

Arteta remains upbeat

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta struck an optimistic note despite his side suffering a 3-1 pre-season defeat to Real Betis in Dublin. "We're even more excited," Arteta said. "We are going to attack every possible title as that's the ambition we have."

"We will go from strength to strength — whether it's the players we have, to take them to a different level, or with the market that is still open to recruit as well. We're optimistic about it."
