Vinicius Junior has signed a new six-year contract with Real Madrid, committing his future to the Spanish giants until 2032 and ending Arsenal's hopes of landing the Brazil forward this summer.

The 24-year-old had entered the final year of his existing deal at the Bernabeu, prompting Arsenal to closely monitor the progress of renewal talks in case an agreement could not be reached. Those hopes have now been extinguished.

Vinicius sends a message to the fans

Posting on his Instagram story, Vinicius left no doubt about his feelings:

"Eight years at the Bernabeu is too short...six more years and forever."

The forward joined Real Madrid at 18 from Brazilian club Flamengo and will be 32 when this new deal expires. In a statement marking the renewal, Real Madrid said:

"Vinicius Jr has become one of the most important players in one of the most successful periods in our history."

Mourinho's influence in the decision

A key factor in securing Vinicius's commitment was his relationship with new Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho. Sources close to the club indicate the two have built a strong bond, with Mourinho consistently making clear he regards Vinicius as central to his project at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid are also said to have improved their contract offer during face-to-face meetings with Vinicius at the club's training ground, helping tip the balance decisively in their favour.

Arsenal turn attention to other targets

The deal is a significant setback for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who had identified the left-wing position as an area requiring elite reinforcement this summer. With Vinicius now off the table, Arsenal must pursue alternative options.

Despite the disappointment, Arteta struck an upbeat tone after his side's 3-1 pre-season loss to Real Betis in Dublin. "We're even more excited," he said. "We are going to attack every possible title as that's the ambition we have. We will go from strength to strength — whether it's the players we have, to take them to a different level, or with the market that is still open to recruit as well. We're optimistic about it."

Guimaraes deal nears completion

Arsenal are, however, closing in on at least one major signing this window. The Premier League champions have agreed a £75 million fee with Newcastle for captain Bruno Guimaraes, with the 28-year-old understood to have been undergoing a medical in London on Thursday.

Guimaraes joined Newcastle in 2022 from Lyon for £40 million and has made 195 appearances for the club, scoring 31 goals. He had informed Newcastle earlier this summer that he wished to move to Arsenal if a suitable offer materialised, and the clubs have now reached an agreement after the Gunners' opening bid was turned down.

Should the transfer be finalised as expected, Newcastle will have raised more than £240 million from player sales this summer alone — a turbulent window that also saw Anthony Gordon depart to Barcelona for £69.3 million, Sandro Tonali join Tottenham Hotspur for £100 million, and manager Eddie Howe leave St James' Park.
