Van de Ven Close to Signing New Five-Year Spurs Deal

Micky van de Ven is on the verge of agreeing a new five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur, BBC Sport understands.

The Netherlands defender originally joined from Wolfsburg in 2023 on a six-year deal running until 2029. However, the 25-year-old had been weighing up his future at the club before Roberto de Zerbi was appointed as manager in March.

De Zerbi's arrival — and the role he played in keeping Spurs in the Premier League — proved to be the turning point in Van de Ven's thinking. The Italian's appointment has been central to the defender's decision to commit his future to north London.

A fresh start after a turbulent season

Tottenham have finished 17th in the Premier League in consecutive seasons, with their survival confirmed only on the final day of the 2025–2026 campaign. The club went through three managers across a chaotic nine-month spell before De Zerbi took charge.

Van de Ven has spoken openly about the difficult period, telling BBC Sport in July: "Last season was a stressful season, unacceptable from our side, so to leave all of that behind and go into the new season fresh means a lot."

The defender pointed to the club's renewed sense of direction as a key factor in his decision. "It's really good that you can see the club has made some changes," he said. "You can see the club has a new ambition. It's something that's really important for players who have been here for a long time."

Optimism under De Zerbi

Van de Ven expressed enthusiasm about the style of football De Zerbi intends to bring to Spurs. "It's going to be different compared to the manager we had last season," he said. "It's also going to be more enjoyable for people to watch because we'll be playing offensive football. It is something we needed because everybody was a little bit down."

With a new contract close to being finalised and fresh ambition at the club, Van de Ven appears set to continue his development as one of the Premier League's most dynamic defenders.
