Xavi Eyes International Coaching Role Including AFCON
Former Barcelona and Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez has revealed his ambition to move into international management, expressing a willingness to coach at major tournaments including the Africa Cup of Nations, the UEFA European Championship, and the Asian Cup.
Speaking to RNE, as relayed by beIN Sports, the 46-year-old was candid about his desire for a national team role: "My next step could be a national team. I'll say it openly: this could be a good fit for me."
Xavi cited family considerations as a key factor in his thinking. "I have family. A club wouldn't allow me as much time with my family; I've got young children," he said. "I'm keen to take part as a coach in a World Cup, Euros, AFCON, or the Asian Cup."
A record-breaking spell at Barcelona
Xavi took charge of Barcelona for 143 matches between 2021 and May 2024, recording 90 wins, 24 draws, and 29 defeats — a win rate of 62.9 percent. He guided the club to the LaLiga title in 2022-23, along with the Supercopa de Espana, before a trophyless final season ended his tenure at Camp Nou.
Prior to his time in Spain, he managed Qatari club Al-Sadd, lifting seven trophies during his stint there.
One of football's all-time greats
Widely considered among the finest midfielders ever to have played the game, Xavi built his reputation on supreme vision and an unrivalled passing range. He holds the record as Spain's all-time top assist provider in the UEFA Champions League, with 30 assists to his name.
Xavi made 767 official appearances for Barcelona — a club record subsequently surpassed by Lionel Messi — and scored 85 goals. He is one of a rare group of players to have exceeded 1,000 professional appearances across their career.
With Spain, Xavi collected an extraordinary array of honours: the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1999, an Olympic silver medal at the 2000 Games, two UEFA European Championship titles in 2008 and 2012, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He was capped 133 times for Spain and named Player of the Tournament at UEFA Euro 2008. He also became the first player in history to provide assists in two separate European Championship finals, setting up two goals in the UEFA Euro 2012 Final.
Xavi retired from international football after the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
