Ryan Alebiosu has voiced his frustration at a controversial late penalty decision that denied Blackburn Rovers all three points against Wolverhampton Wanderers in their EFL Championship season opener on Friday, which ended 2-2.

Raúl Jiménez stepped up to convert the spot-kick in the 93rd minute, rescuing a draw for Wolverhampton Wanderers and leaving Blackburn Rovers to rue what had looked like a certain victory. Alebiosu insisted he was outside the penalty area when the ball struck his arm, and that television replays supported his belief.

"We're frustrated, the boys have done everything to get the three points," the Nigeria international told the Guardian. "The ball has been played, and I thought I was outside the box… obviously the decision has gone against us."

The right-back acknowledged the sting of conceding so late but was keen to highlight the collective effort his side put in throughout the match. "The boys dug deep, and we thought we had it. Just the final details with the penalty is frustrating. If we play like that every week, we'll go far in the table," he added.

Despite the bitter finish, Alebiosu earned the Man of the Match award for his performance — a recognition that underlined how well the Super Eagles defender had played before the closing controversy.

Blackburn Rovers will look to bounce back quickly when they host Middlesbrough at Ewood Park next weekend.
