Alphonso Davies Set to Return for Canada's Must-Win World Cup Clash With Switzerland

1 hour ago·1 min

Alphonso Davies is on the verge of rejoining Canada's squad for their pivotal FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage encounter against Switzerland in Vancouver, with manager Jesse Marsch indicating the captain could feature — at minimum from the bench.

The Bayern Munich left-back has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury in the second leg of Bayern Munich's UEFA Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 6. The setback has kept Davies away from action as Canada navigated their opening two group matches without him.

Canada flying high without their captain

In Davies' absence, Canada have impressed at their home World Cup. Jesse Marsch's side claimed their first-ever World Cup point with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, then followed it up with a historic first World Cup victory — a commanding 6-0 demolition of Qatar in Vancouver.

Those results have Canada sitting at the top of Group B heading into tonight's 8pm BST kick-off against Switzerland. A draw or better would hand Canada the group — and crucially, securing first place guarantees their last-32 and potential last-16 fixtures remain in Vancouver, rather than forcing them to travel to the USA for knockout football.
