Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that replacing Neymar in the national team is simply not possible, calling the retired forward an extraordinary and unique talent.

Speaking to CNN Esportes, Ancelotti was emphatic: "Neymar cannot be replaced because he was an extraordinary and unique talent. So, an irreplaceable player."

Neymar announced his retirement from international football following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Brazil were eliminated in the round of 16 by Norway. His participation in the tournament had been in serious doubt after a long battle with a knee injury, and he ultimately made just two substitute appearances across the competition.

A record-breaking legacy

The 34-year-old departs as Brazil's all-time leading scorer, having netted 80 goals across 130 international appearances. He is also only the second player in Brazilian football history — after Pelé — to score at four different World Cups, finding the net in the 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026 editions.

"He deserved to be there because of his quality," Ancelotti said, acknowledging Neymar's place in the squad despite his fitness struggles. "Neymar has already confirmed that he does not want to return to the national team."

Beyond international football, Neymar has also hinted that his club career may be drawing to a close, raising questions about whether the former Barcelona man will continue playing at the highest level at all.
