Arsenal are closing in on a deal to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United, but the full financial picture is more complex than initially reported, with sources in Brazil indicating that a range of undisclosed bonuses form part of the agreement.

ESPN Brazil journalist Bruno Andrade, who had earlier signalled that the deal was near completion, offered fresh detail on the structure of the transfer.

"There are a lot of details involved in this transfer and many bonuses that Newcastle are not planning to make public. I've spoken to people who took part in the negotiations, and there is actually more money involved in the agreement between the clubs."

The total package is understood to be around £80 million, representing a midpoint between the £60 million Arsenal originally tabled and the £100 million Newcastle had set as their asking price — a figure matching the fee they received for Sandro Tonali.

Contract structure and bonus clauses

Among the likely add-ons are win bonuses tied to another Premier League title and a first-ever UEFA Champions League triumph. A further payment may be triggered once Guimaraes has made a set number of appearances for the Gunners.

Arsenal are also reported to be seeking to spread the transfer fee across four years rather than five, which would mean annual instalments of around £20 million to Newcastle as opposed to £16 million.

On the personal terms, Andrade reports that Guimaraes will sign a four-year contract with Arsenal, with an option to extend for a fifth year included at the end of the deal.

The Gabriel Jesus factor

The inclusion of a fifth-year option is thought to reflect the age of the Rio de Janeiro-born midfielder, who turns 29 in November. Sporting director Andrea Berta appears keen to avoid a repeat of the situation surrounding compatriot Gabriel Jesus — a player signed in his prime who, after a series of injuries, Arsenal have found difficult to move on four years into his contract.

Guimaraes is valued at €70 million by Transfermarkt. His arrival would mark a significant addition to Mikel Arteta's squad as Arsenal target a first UEFA Champions League title.
