Newcastle United and England legend Alan Shearer believes Bruno Guimaraes will sharpen Arsenal into possessing the finest midfield in world football — and manager Mikel Arteta may already be on the verge of that landmark.

Arsenal are closing in on a £75 million deal to bring the Brazilian midfielder to the Emirates Stadium, with Arteta having identified Guimaraes as his primary midfield target during the summer transfer window as the club look to defend their Premier League title.

A dream midfield taking shape

Guimaraes, 28, spent five years at St James' Park, where he helped Newcastle United qualify for the UEFA Champions League and lift the Carabao Cup. His departure follows a difficult 2025-26 season for Newcastle, and the player's own eagerness to test himself at Premier League champions Arsenal proved decisive.

He is set to join an already formidable Arsenal midfield featuring Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze, and Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Shearer, speaking to Betfair, left no room for ambiguity about the quality of the incoming signing.
