Atletico Madrid are in active discussions to sign Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero, with Sky Sports News understanding that figures have already been exchanged between the two clubs — though Spurs are yet to receive a formal offer.

The Argentine defender has long attracted interest from the Spanish capital, and his departure from north London looks increasingly likely this summer. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi has indicated during pre-season that he would not block a move if Romero wished to leave.

Inter Milan interest complicated by finances

Atletico Madrid are not the only club circling. Inter Milan are also keen on the Tottenham Hotspur captain, but their pursuit is hampered by financial constraints. According to Sky's Italian sources, the figures involved — in terms of both the transfer fee and wages — have made a deal difficult for Inter at this stage. The Italian giants would need to offload players before making a serious move.

Atletico clear the way with defensive sales

Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, have made meaningful strides in reducing their defensive ranks. Matteo Ruggeri is closing in on a transfer to Aston Villa, while Nahuel Molina is expected to join Roma. Those exits are expected to free up the funds and squad space necessary for Atletico to table a firm offer to Tottenham Hotspur.

Romero, who was handed the captaincy by former Spurs boss Thomas Frank last summer, signed a contract extension at the time that runs until 2029. However, with Tottenham Hotspur having reinforced at centre-back this summer — bringing in Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi — the club now carries a surplus in that position, making Romero's exit a realistic proposition for all parties.
